You made it through cancer. Now reach out to someone who is up against it. “Connections” is a volunteer peer support program where cancer survivors (and their caregivers) who completed treatment at least a year ago are trained to become telephone guides or mentors for more newly diagnosed survivors and their families in similar situations to yours. Guides receive training, support, and resources. HIDE 9th Annual Railroad Grade 5K Run
A fast, flat, scenic 5K run in the Mountains of North Carolina. All proceeds will benefit the R. Flake Shaw Scholarship Fund.

Bring friends and family and get ready to get your hands dirty! Join us this afternoon for the opportunity to connect and learn from a local farmer in our area. We will begin with a short yoga practice accessible to all levels followed by hands-on help working with the farmer in the fields. Karma Krew is a non-profit organization that aims to expand the teachings and practices of yoga off the mat and into the community.

It costs $2.00 to enter and first prize is $35.00, second prize $20.00 and third prize $10.00. Bring your wreath by NC Cooperative Extension, 971 West King St, on Friday, September 24th to be judged. The judged wreaths will be on display at the Agricultural Conference Center, 252 Poplar Grove Rd, on Saturday, September 25th, 10 until noon. Wreath makers will have the option of selling their wreath. Light refreshments provided on Saturday and the public is invited to view wreaths.

HIDE FREE HEALTH SCREENINGS FOR OLDER ADULTS IN WATAUGA COUNTY
The Watauga County Project on Aging and Watauga Medical Center will be offering free health screening clinics to residents of Watauga County aged sixty and older. The clinics will be held at the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center in Boone on Thursday, July 15 and Thursday, September 9. Screenings will also be held at the Western Watauga Community Center on Thursday, August 19 and Thursday, October 21. Persons aged 60-64 with no insurance are encouraged to participate in a screening and will be given priority if necessary.
HIDEThe screening will consist of a comprehensive metabolic panel, hemoglobin, hematocrit, lipid profile, urine analysis, medical history, teaching breast self-examinations and symptoms of prostate cancer, visual acuity, glaucoma, height, weight, blood pressure, and distribution of educational materials. Eligible persons may participate one time only in a 12-month period (July-June). Call 265-8090 to make an appointment or for further information. You must have an appointment for the clinic.

LOCAL, a student group at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk will be hosting a weekly Monday evening farmers market from 5-7pm throughout the growing season. The first Market is on June 14th, and will be located on the large lawn adjacent to Main Street Banner Elk. Any proceeds generated will be used for service learning at the college. The High Country Triple Crown is the premier running series in the High Country of North Carolina. In existence for five years and headquartered in Boone, NC, the Triple Crown consists of three races of varying difficulty and terrain. All races showcase the breathtaking scenery of the NC mountains coupled with the vitality of the local community. Formerly managed by the High Country Soccer Association, the High Country Triple Crown has taken a new direction and is now affiliated with the Appalachian State University Institute for Health and Human Services. Beginning in 2010, 100% of the proceeds from the race series will benefit Girls on the Run of the High Country.

HIDE WNC Lupus Support Group-LFA Peidmont Chapter
The Western North Carolina group has been formed for those living with lupus, as well as their family member and caregivers. It is estimated that in Haywood and surrounding counties there are more than 2,000 living with lupus. This group allows its members an opportunity for a healthy exchange of feelings, opinions and thoughts while coping with this very complicated illness. Meeting programs vary from guest speakers to DVD presentations and open group discussion.
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease which can be destructive to any major organ or tissue in the body. The disease can be very unpredictable and is potentially fatal, yet no satisfactory treatment or a cure exists. Approximately 1.5 million Americans and at least five million people worldwide have a form of lupus. Lupus strikes mostly females ages 15-44, although females and males of all ages can develop lupus, and African American women are 2-3 times more likely to develop lupus.

HIDE Extra Help with Prescription Drug Costs
Do you know someone who is on Medicare and needs assistance in paying for their prescription drugs? Medicare beneficiaries may be eligible for the federal Extra Help low income subsidy (LIS) program if he/she has limited income and resources.
HIDEThe Extra Help program can increase cost savings by paying for all or part of the month premiums, annual deductibles, and provide lower prescription co-payments under a Medicare prescription drug plan. To qualify for Extra Help, the annual income must be limited to $1,353.75/month for an individual ($1,821.25/month for a married couple living together). Additionally, the total resources must be limited to $12,510 for an individual ($25,010 for a married couple living together). The resources do not include a primary residence or a vehicle. If you believe someone you know may qualify for the Extra Help program, please encourage them to apply on-line at www.socialsecurity.gov, or contact Social Security toll free at 800-443-9354. They may also contact the Watauga County Project on Aging at 265-8090 for assistance in completing an application.
